iPods are taking over the world. My own kids got ‘em for the holidays, and spend nearly every idle moment touching the screen or jiggling it just so. Last night, my son Max was using an app which let him shoot snot out of monster’s nose, at cannibals who were throwing rocks at him. Weird? You bet. What’s even weirder is that there are plenty of apps for we boaters, too. The newest? Just announced is iBoatservice, which goes for a whopping $2.99 at the app store or can be downloaded at www.iBoatservice.com.
The app essentially turns your iPod into a boat management tool; it keeps track of warranty periods, monitors the status of service requests, and allows you to segregate different boats with different service centers. The really useful part IMHO, however, is the ability to create and manage service requests, attach photos to them, and send them to your local service center at the press of a button. That means you can get an estimate, authorize a job, or order parts with your iPod. Hold on there technogeek boaters – news flash – you can accomplish all of these things with a regular cell phone, or a landline and a digital camera. So iBoatservies isn’t exactly what you’d call a necessity. And even though it’s only three bucks, you have to be wary of loading up on the cheap apps – as my kids found out, they can add up quickly and before you know it you can burn up your weekly chore money in no time. So it’ll be more interesting to people who own or manage fleets of boats. And in any case, it could make the world a tiny bit easier. Even if it is a world ruled by iPods.
