Minn Kota is known for building high-end electric trolling motors, and the Edge and Riptide models are two you’ve probably seen in the past. But Minn Kota decided to redesign them, and chances are you’ll want to check out these new models, which will hit the stores this October. The mounts have been changed to feature an extruded upper arm, made from marine-grade anodized aluminum. The idea is to extend the motor’s longevity, for years of trouble-free use. Note – I’ve had an old-design Riptide for going on 10 years now, and never had a moment’s problem with it. Edge cable-steer motors also feature a redesigned motor head, which is constructed of an impact-resistant hybrid composite material. The head also integrates a high-visibility directional indicator, and an ultra-responsive foot pedal that’s ergonomically designed for precise speed and steering control. All Riptide SE motors are constructed to withstand the harsh environment of saltwater and the new additional anodized aluminum upper arm is no exception. The motors also feature fully encapsulated electronics and a patented sacrificial zinc anode for added corrosion protection. Is it effective? Remember that 10 year old model I have? It’s been used in the salty Chesapeake Bay, hundreds of times, and shows absolutely zero signs of corrosion. Riptide SE motors also include Digital Maximizer technology that provides up to five times longer run time on a single charge. Both the Edge and Riptide SE motors utilize a Latch & Door mounting system for easy removal of the motor for security and storage. Adding to their ruggedness, both models have a composite shaft that is guaranteed for life. I can vouch for this component, too, having run full-tilt into tree stumps and oyster bars, without doing any damage. Of course, quality doesn’t come cheap – the MSRPs for the new Edge models range from $279.99 to $584.99, and the MSRPs for the new Riptide SE models range from $649.99 to $779.99. Add your comment |
